Working on a collaboration for a series of mini-prints based on the Old Maid card game. Our character is Greasy Grimes. I wanted the image to reflect the playing card origins but also to two sides of a personality - inner and outer faces. Old Maid itself is a term for an old unwed spinster type, and the characters in the game are predominantly undesirable. But what is more desirable, inner or outer beauty?
“Beauty is but skin deep, ugly lies the bone; Beauty dies and fades away, but ugly holds its own”
