Sean and I are slowly figuring things out - deciphering V's many faces, learning more about her temperament (a pretty chill baby with a stubborn streak), rediscovering our ability to survive with sleep deprivation...There's definitely a learning curve, which we are slowly climbing, and I thought I'd share a few of the stupid mistakes/different lessons we're learning along the way.
#1 on the list: never (I repeat, NEVER) change a baby's diaper on your bed (unless it is totally covered in plastic). You can guess where this story is headed.
Because we live and work out of a 400 square foot apartment, we kept our baby gear purchasing to a minimum. We don't have a dedicated diaper changing space, and we use one of those portable, plastic changing mats to change her diaper instead. Normally this takes place on the floor, but we'd been home for a few days and I was super tired, so I decided to change her from the comfort of the bed instead (on the plastic changing mat - I'm not totally dumb). As I'm changing her diaper, V decides that she wasn't quite done yet, and pooped mid-change. As you may or may not know, baby poop is pretty watery, and can travel great distances when not contained by a diaper. To keep this post as tasteful as it can be when it's about baby poop, I will spare you the gory details, but as I'm frantically cleaning up her mat and our sheets, she gives us an encore, not just once, but TWICE. So, that is why you never change a baby's diaper on your bed, or on any other surface that isn't easily cleaned. Noob parent lesson #1 learned!
