To date, the thing that V likes the most when she's upset or sleepy is a pacifier. This usually means that Sean and I have to make a thousand trips over to her crib to pop the pacifier back in her mouth when she loses it. Good exercise for us, but occasionally annoying, I'm not going to lie. However, over the last week V discovered her hand and has been attempting to use it to pacify herself. I say attempt, because I wouldn't really call it pacification yet, more like going bananas and getting frustrated as she tries to figure out how to do this.
And so on. I don't know if I should be rejoicing that she is learning a skill set that she can use to soothe herself, or if I should cringe because that skill set is thumb sucking, and as the old saying goes - you can take away a pacifier, but you can't take away the thumb...
Also, because I think they are cute/funny, a few of my favorite photos below of V falling asleep with her pacifier...

She is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteaw... she is so cute... love the video...
ReplyDeleteyou know. we weren't sure about this whole pacifier deal but we used it pretty intensively for our roo's first six month. it came really handy when we were traveling to Europe (hello, air travel...:) then she just stopped using it at 6 month. it was a rather sudden transition but i guess at some point the whole need to "suck on something for comfort" just disappears and every kid figures it out on her/his own term.
yeah - before I had V, I always figured I would avoid both the pacifier and the thumb as much as possible, but it's amazing what you'll do to help your child calm down/go to sleep (and therefore let you sleep!)...it will be interesting to see if/when she decides enough is enough...I was four before I stopped using a pacifier!
